Agrana Romania, the biggest player on the local sugar market, sold 26,000 tonnes of white sugar on foreign markets last year, which accounts for around 86% of the total white sugar exports conducted by Romania, according to company information. In the 2006-2007 fiscal year, Agrana produced 38,000 tonnes of white sugar from sugar beet, and refined another 183,000 tonnes from raw sugar. The company reported a 609 million-RON (about 173 million-euro) turnover last year, 52% higher than in the 2005 period. "The increase was prompted by higher prices seen in the first part of 2006, by the positive exchange rate, and by an increased efficiency in production and supplying of necessary raw material," according to company information. Sugar consumption stood at around 560,000 tonnes last year, putting the market value at over 250 million euros.
