The average net wage in the banking system in May overshot the 1,000-euro mark for the first time ever, National Statistics Institute (INS) data say. Employees of this sector earned an average net wage of 3,746 RON (1,142 euros), 24.8% more than in April. This is also the highest increase in net wages per field of activity. The net average wage in the overall economy stood at 1,012 RON (309 euros) in May, 21.5% more than the level registered last year, with the index of actual wage witnessing a 17% increase against the same month in 2006. According to the National Statistics Institute, in comparison with April, the average net wage dropped by 1.5%, as a result of Easter bonuses being granted. In real terms (excluding inflation), the net average wage fell by 2.1% in May against April. The gross average wage for the overall economy stood at 1,361 RON (415 euros) in May, down 1.9% on April. The highest-paid employee categories also include individuals working in the airline industry- 2,268 RON (691 euros), in hydrocarbon extraction - 2,004 RON (610 euros) and individuals working in manufacturing tobacco products - 2,097 RON (639 euros). At the bottom end of the ranking are employees in the wood processing and wood and Lombardy poplar products industry (excluding furniture producers) with a net wage of 594 RON (181 euros). The biggest wage decline was experienced in May in the field of water transportation, with the average net income falling 25.6% against April, to 1,214 RON (370 euros).
