Bistrita-based Rombat, the main local producer of car batteries, has budgeted investments worth some 5.5 million euros for developing plastic injection capacities this year, as well as for expanding facilities for the recovery of lead from used batteries. "As a result of these investments, we will produce a large part of the necessary plastic for the car battery, and import only a small share of the amount we need," Ioan Repede, general manager of Rombat told ZF Transilvania. Last year, Rombat had an approximately 3 million-euro investment programme, focusing mainly on expanding production capacity and on modernising the distribution network. According to information provided by company representatives, after the 1990 privatisation, the Bistrita-based plant saw investments worth over 9.2 million euros in the retooling process.
