Bird flu pushes Avicola sales down 85%

05.06.2006, 00:00 8

Poultry meat producer Avicola Focsani saw an 85% drop in sales last month after new cases of bird flu were reported. "It is hard to believe that we will end the year in the black. We have already lost over 150,000 euros just in one segment. The market dropped by 80% to 95%, which means that all our production is stocked," stated Danut Vicol, general manager of Avicola Focsani. The total losses in the poultry sector caused by the avian flu and by the competition of imports at dumping prices were estimated at 50 million euros at the beginning of May. In May, poultry farms witnessed losses estimated at almost 20 million euros. The company posted net profit worth 1.5 million euros (5.4 million RON) last year, with turnover standing at 19.2 million euros (69.3 million RON), a 10% increase against 2004. "We cannot make any kind of estimate regarding the financial results for 2006 at the moment," says Vicol. After investments worth 3 million euros in the last three years, the company had budgeted investments of 1.5 million euros for this year, which it cannot carry out for the time being. ZF
