22.12.2003, 00:00 7

Viorel Catarama, owner of the furniture company Elvila, is in talks to buy two furniture plants that he intends to acquire in early 2004. "We will buy two furniture plants, for which we will pay 2-3 million euros." Catarama would not name the factories, but said they were based in Northern Romania. The company already controls four plants based in Beius, Ramnicu-Valcea, Mizil and Piatra-Neamt.

Elvila this summer teamed up with the largest French furniture group, Conforama, to deliver furniture worth 10 million euros next year.

"We have delivered so far furniture amounting to 1 million euros for the Switzerland-based Conforama and we will begin to work with the Conforama stores from France next year. We intend to sell furniture worth 10 million euros to the Conforama group next year," the businessman said. Conforama will open an acquisition office in Romania in the following period. Elvila also closed a partnership with the Swedish group Ikea, aiming at contracts of 10 million euros.

Also next year, the Elvila network will add another four stores, located in Alba-Iulia, Galati, Constanta and Iasi, in which the company has invested over 2 million euros.

Viorel Catarama, one of the wealthiest men in Romania, has just bought a Maybach 62 automobile, produced by the German carmaker DaimlerCrysler. He is the first Romanian to own a Maybach, whose price tag exceeds 360,000 euros. The very exclusive Maybach 62 was launched in 2002 and up to 1,000 units are produced every year. georgiana.stavarache@zf.ro
