Cosmote network overloaded by "2000 minutes for 3 euros" special offer

20.03.2006, 00:00 7

Mobile telephony operator Cosmote Romania closed its "2,000 minutes (for calls) inside the network for 3 euros" special officer sooner than planned due to a "temporary overload" of its network, company officials say. Cosmote also mentions the "unprecedented demand" for the offer, and announces the arrival of specialists from Greece to adjust the infrastructure to the new conditions. Therefore, in order to maintain the telephony "service quality", says Cosmote, the extra-option that gets one 2,000 minutes for calls within the network per month in exchange for 3 euros will be possible to activate until March 31 only by those clients that get a new card and make their first call (thus activating the card) until March 22, 2006. The network overload was caused by a sales volume that took even the operator by surprise, with market sources saying that more than 100,000 cards have been sold in the last 17 days, double the number of activated numbers Cosmote had at the end of last year (both prepaid and postpaid). As regards these estimates, Tereza Vulcan, Corporate Affairs Manager with Cosmote Romania, told ZIARUL FINANCIAR that the only official figure was that "tens of thousands of Cosmote clients benefit from the extra option for 2,000 call minutes inside the network." To be able to cope with the significant traffic increase in the network and solve the issue of the network overload, Cosmote Romania officials decided to bring in equipment and experts from Greece. The company also found itself having to make investments in the network sooner than anticipated. At the time of its launch, the operator had committed to invest at least 450 million euros in the next three years, with 200 million euros set aside for 2006. ZF
