Direct sales to boom by 2007

13.04.2004, 00:00 6

The direct sales personnel is set to double by 2007, which means you have to brace for more phone calls and knocks on your door.

The number of Romanians who will be working in the direct sales system will double by 2007, up to 400,000 people, according to the Romanian Direct Selling Association (RODSA), which comprises eleven companies operating in this industry. The number of direct distributors currently amounts to 200,000 in Romania, whereas the total workforce stands at 9 million, with 4.5 million being employees.

The increasing number of people working in sales proves that the Romanian economy is about to become dominated by services, just like the Western European economies are. In the United States, for instance, professions such as real estate or insurance agent are widespread.

The Romanian market counts 35 direct sales firms, among which the big international cosmetics such as Avon Romania ($60m sales), Oriflame Romania, Zepter Romania - with sales worth tens of millions of dollars.

According to RODSA estimates, the market of direct sales amounted to 130 million euros last year, up 25% from the previous year. Also last year, the number of distributors went up 15% and six more companies entered the market.

"The market of direct sales will boom in the next few years, when the number of companies and distributors will grow. The enforcement of new regulations - Law 650 regulating the sales of goods and services - last year will also prompt new companies to enter the market," says Marius Dumitras, RODSA chairman.
