Economic growth, likely to reach 6.5%

23.08.2004, 00:00 6

This year's agricultural production will set the economic growth pace at 6.5%, one point above initial estimates, while the share of the agricultural sector in the GDP will go up to 13-14%, as compared to initial projections of 11.4%. These are some of the forecasts recently made by representatives of the National Prognosis Commission (CNP). "The 6.5% economic growth rate is not an official projection because we have not received all of the first-half results from the National Statistics Institute, yet. The respective growth is based on the solid agricultural production," stated Cornel Dragan, a director with CNP. The level of economic growth estimated at the beginning of this year amounted to 5.5% of GDP, 0.6 points above the growth pace logged in 2003. At the end of July, Premier Adrian Nastase said the Romanian economy was likely to advance by 7% this year, considering positive evolutions in the economic sectors, mainly in agriculture. At the same time, the record agricultural production will push up the weight of the agricultural sector within GDP to 13-14%, while the segment of services will not exceed 50%, below the European average.
