Finance Ministry expects record profits for the banking system

19.10.2006, 19:25 10

The banking system is to see a peak in terms of profit, of almost 750 million euros this year, according to a forecast of the Finance Ministry. This year the Finance Ministry expects to collect taxes from profits derived by the commercial banking sector worth some 120 million euros, a 17% increase against the sum collected in 2005, according to the latest estimates that have been published at the same time as the budget draft for next year. According to the same estimates made by the Finance Ministry, bank profits are expected to go down in 2007, as bankers had anticipated to happen as early as in 2006. Big banks did see a slowdown in profits in the first six months of this year, but the market as a whole has maintained a steady growth rate, even without the spectacular effect of the 2005 cutback in the profit tax. Total profit derived by the banking system is supposed to go down almost 13% next year, according to estimates of the Finance Ministry, to a sum equivalent to approximately 651 million euros, which corresponds to a budget contribution of some 104 million euros in form of profit tax.
