Hungarian ambassador to Sofia makes controversial statements

20.08.2001, 00:00 10

The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) considers that the statements of the Hungarian ambassador to Sofia criticising the idea of a Romanian-Bulgarian tandem break the rules of diplomatic practice.

Consequently, an official clarification is expected from the Hungarian diplomat. The statements of the Hungarian ambassador, published by the Bulgarian media, criticise the possibility of concluding a tandem between the two countries, as Premier Adrian Nastase had proposed during his recent visit to Bulgaria.

Bucharest diplomacy, which disagrees with the statements of the Hungarian official, considers that the latter's urges that Bulgaria should give up the partnership with Romania are "an action beyond the current diplomatic practices of non-interfering publicly in the ties between the residential country and a third country."
