Portuguese group Martifer is to build a factory in Calarasi for the production of float glass for use in construction, under an 18 million euro contract. The investment will be made by French company Saint Gobain. The French announced last year that they would invest more than 100 million euros in the construction of a factory in Calarasi, with the investment set to shape the entire infrastructure of the harbour on the Danube and even to attract other investors to the area. Martifer has worked on major infrastructure projects in Portugal, including the airport in Porto, and was also involved in the construction of stadiums for the 2004 European Football Championship. The Portuguese company, which operates in construction, real estate and the energy sector, has announced plans to invest some 140 million euros in Romania and generate 200 million euros in turnover by 2008.
