Mobile licence for SNR

23.06.2000, 00:00 7

A new mobile phone licence, operational starting January 1, 2003, will be granted to the National Radio-broadcasting Company (SNR) to the end of increasing its market value for privatisation, Sergiu Iliescu, chairman of the National Communications Agency (ANCI), stated yesterday.

According to Iliescu, the Government might approve a regulation in this sense during parliamentary holidays. It would grant SNR the right to operate on the DCS 1800 frequency, starting year 2003. According to the contract for RomTelecom privatisation, Cosmorom, whose majority shareholder is RomTelecom, was granted exclusivity for operating on the DCS 1800 frequency until the end of year 2002. Sergiu Iliescu said that the licence tax would stand at 25 million dollars.

SNR will invest this year, from its own resources, a sum of 50 billion lei aimed at the technological update of its equipment and network development, atefan Molinaru, the company's general director, has recently stated.

Molinaru said that SNR decided to sustain such a financial effort from its own funds, as the company received from the state budget, for investments, a sum amounting to only 4.8 billion lei, though it had requested 280 billion lei.

Investments are necessary for the company's development, especially in the perspective of its being privatised through a powerful company within the field, a process estimated to be concluded by the end of this year.

ABN Amro Corporate Finance will present in mid-July a report concerning the stages of privatisation, and by the end of October - beginning of November, the strategic investor to take over SNR will be announced.
