PN?CD, UFD and FER created CDR-2000

08.08.2000, 00:00 14

PN?CD (Peasants' Party), UFD (Union of Right-wing Forces) and FER (Ecologist Federation) leaders yesterday signed the protocol of the "centre-right" alliance named Conventia Democrata Romana - 2000 (The Romanian Democratic Convention - 2000). The new alliance supports Mugur Isarescu for presidential elections, but will propose another candidate in case the current PM refuses to enter the race for the Cotroceni Palace. From this respect, the new alliance is not 100% against supporting Theodor Stolojan for the presidentials.

According to the protocol, the parties that make up the alliance will support the same candidate in the presidential elections and will run in the elections on common lists. The percentage granted to each party on the electoral lists is to be established in the weeks to come, after concluding a "technical protocol." The three parties of the alliance will preserve their ideological characteristics, among which "Christian Democracy, right liberalism and ecological principles" - but will have a common "economic platform," based on Romania's European Union Joining Strategy, PN?CD general secretary Remus Opris said. At the same time, every party will preserve its own programme, structure and juridical status.

The leading structure of the new Convention will be a Council made up of nine members - four from PN?CD, three from UFD and two from FER. The new alliance will be "opened" to every party and civic organisation that will support its economic platform and principles, Remus Opris added.
