Companies operating in trade and constructions hired the most employees last year, with the personnel rise being accompanied by an increase in the average monthly labour cost, which was higher than the overall economic average. Last year, the average number of employees stood at 4.8 million, over 200,000 people more than in 2006, after more than half of the new employees were absorbed by the retail and the constructions sector, according to data published yesterday by the National Statistics Institute. Therefore, the number of employees in the trade sector went up by 59,300 people, while in constructions, there were 53,600 people more than in 2006. Other sectors that attracted large numbers of staff included real estate agencies (38,500 more people) and public administration (22,900 more people). The main suppliers of labour were mining companies, which cut their number of employees by 10,000 last year, the farming sector, which lost over 8,000 people, and the processing industry, which had almost 6,000 employees less than in 2006. The regional statistics reveals that the Bucharest and Ilfov area accounted for almost one fifth (19.9%) of overall employees, this being the highest growth in terms of number of employees against 2006 (77,440 people more). Over half (56%) of employees recorded last year worked in the services sector, whilst industry and constructions accounted for 41.4% of this percentage.
