Sodexho: Small firms have less time and money to motivate employees

The reason for this decision is that the penetration of the voucher system is four times lower in such companies than in multinationals.
"The penetration rate of vouchers (luncheon vouchers, gift vouchers, incentive vouchers, childcare vouchers) in the micro-enterprise and small enterprises sector amounts to 20%, while large, multinational companies have an 80% penetration rate," said Francois Podeur, general manager of Sodexho Pass Romania.
However, the voucher market is experiencing 10-15% growth rate in the sector of small companies, higher than that of the overall market.
"Small companies have less time and less money for personnel motivation. Big companies are more involved in activities oriented towards personnel stimulation and retention, as they are highly interested in, as well as having all the necessary resources to motivate their employees," explained Podeur. Out of all corporate clients, around 20% are big companies, which bring Sodexho Pass the bulk of its revenues.
"Big companies have the highest contribution to the company's turnover, 80%, while small and very small companies bring just 20% of turnover, although they account for the majority of clients," said Sodexho's general manager.
Among the clients attracted this year is Betty Ice, one of the biggest ice cream producers on the market, winemaker Vincon Vrancea, varnish and paint producer K?ber and the National Library of Romania.
Other clients include Dacia-Renault, CEC Bank (Romanian Savings Bank), Danone, Michelin, BRD and RATB (the operator of Bucharest's public transport network). "Competition is increasingly tight on the labour market, and employee benefits could boost the retention rate," said Podeur.
He added that, among companies that cannot benefit from such perks are companies indebted to the state and some public institutions "Hospitals are also excluded," he said.
The total volume of vouchers issued by Sodexho is expected to rise by around 27% this year compared with 2007.
"The total value of vouchers issued last year amounted to 422 million euros (1.5 billion RON) last year, and we estimate it will reach 535 million euros (1.9 billion RON) this year, amid a rise in the portfolio of clients," said Francois Podeur.
The company posted net profit worth 12 million euros last year and expects to derive 14 million euros this year.
