Stolojan stirred up spirits within PN?CD

10.08.2000, 00:00 8

Four important PN?CD (Peasants' Party) members, Norica Nicolai, a secretary of state within the Labour Ministry, Alexandru Ciocalteu, chairman of the National Social Health Insurance Office, Sorin Fodoreanu, a national commissioner of Expo Hanovra 2000 and PN?CD deputy Sorin Dumitriu, a former chairman of the State Ownership Fund, yesterday announced, through a press release, that they were teaming up with PNL (Liberal Party) to create a powerful political force and support Theodor Stolojan for presidency, because they could no longer wait for their party to make such a decision. Moreover, Norica Nicolai and Alexandru Ciocalteu did not rule out the possibility of their leaving PN?CD in favour of PNL.

"It is obvious for any politician of good will that, under the current political situation, the coagulation of a powerful political force capable of attaining balance of the Romanian political stage is needed. Recent political events have shown that the only party that can coagulate such a political force is PNL," reads the statement issued by the four PN?CD members.

The document maintains that Theodor Stolojan's decision to join PNL supports this theory and that he should be followed by other public personalities and political forces.

The Peasants' statement pleads for a Liberal economic programme, because it can offer the premises for a viable alternative to the current situation and it can lead to political system reform.

"We were hoping to be joined by PN?CD in this constructive effort, but our wish has not been fulfilled yet. We can no longer wait. This is why we are now teaming with PNL, hoping that PN?CD would also contribute to the creation of a large support basis for Theodor Stolojan's candidacy for the position of president of Romania," the above-quoted document underlines.
