Sugar plants split production quotas

13.09.2004, 00:00 13

The nine important sugar plants will soon start negotiations for the splitting of production quotas to be allotted to Romania after it joins the European Union. Depending on their output during the reference period, 1998-2002, they will divide a quantity of 537,000 tonnes of sugar (109,000 tonnes of beet sugar, 329,000 tonnes of gross sugar and 9,900 tonnes of iso-glucose, a liquid sugar derived from maize and used in the foods industry). "Of the current nine top producers, only 3-4 will probably be left. At the time of integration, the market will be worth about the same as last year," says Emilian Dobrescu, general representative of Agrana Romania, the top player on the Romanian market, whose sales stood at 68 million euros last year.
