The number of card accounts opened by individuals and companies with the issuer banks went up by 231,000 in the first three months of this year, filings with the National Bank of Romania (NBR) show. The total number of operational card accounts has therefore reached 3,478,000. Three banks, i.e. Banca Comerciala Rom=na (Romanian Commercial Bank - BCR), Banc Post and Banca Rom=na pentru Dezvoltare (Romanian Development Bank - BRD) - Groupe Societe Generale are managing more than 82% of these accounts. The NBR filings show the number of valid cards on the market rose by 146,500 during the same interval, reaching 3,598,000, compared with the 3,452,000 at the end of last year. The increase in the number of cards visibly outran the increase in the number of card accounts, which points to either filing errors or to several cards issued for the same account - a solution used by certain companies. Banks in Q1 expanded card payment infrastructure by 66 ATMs and 652 POS-es, so that the network now comprises 2,150 cash dispensers and 5,571 points that take cards, as shown by quarterly reports filed by issuers with the NBR.
