Vinexpert, the largest wine retailer on the Romanian market, posted 30% higher turnover in December 2008 against the same month in 2007, but below the average growth recorded in the rest of the year. "In December, sales to individuals and to smaller companies went up. However, those to large companies and banks declined. Overall, December saw a 30% growth, while in the rest of the months, the rise amounted to 50% year-on-year," said Catalin Paduraru, who controls 50% in the company. In terms of value, December sales were twice as high as those in regular months, considering the additional increase in sales of products that can be included in a gift pack alongside wine, such as glasses and chocolate. In 2008, Vinexpert expects to post an over 1.6 million-euro turnover, up 50% on 2007. "We were hoping to see an 80% growth, but we fell short of our target due to December sales," added Paduraru. As for 2009 forecasts, the businessman says he expects to see the same growth as in 2008. The most expensive bottle of wine sold during this period is a collector's bottle, which cost 3,000 RON (810 euros).
