Wanted: Romanian CEO to take the reins of Bancpost

EFG Eurobank, the majority shareholder of Bancpost, is looking for a Romanian banker to take over as the CEO of the domestic branch as of January 1, 2007, George Michelis (photo), the current CEO of Bancpost told ZIARUL FINANCIAR. Michelis has decided to go back to Athens after holding this position for two and a half years. "Bancpost is a big bank on the Romanian market and I think it should be run by a local team. This opinion is shared by the parent bank, which is still trying to a find a suitable banker," Michelis says. The Bancpost official says he does not know how likely it is for the current chairman of the Board of Directors, Mihai Bogza, to be appointed CEO. The term of the current chief executive started in July 2004 and was supposed to end next summer, after three years. Michelis, however, says he felt it was only natural that his successor would begin work at the start of the new year. He believes he has completed his job of seeing Bancpost through its restructuring process, from the implementation of a new IT platform to the adoption of the corporate image of the parent bank. "It was a special challenge for me, but I think I did my job. Restructuring is over now, and the bank is ready for growth. We have to recover the ground lost with our territorial network, where we are lagging behind a bit," said Michelis, who will be given new duties in Athens.
