Romania answers Germany's EU questionnaire

20.06.2007, 18:31 10

Romania disagrees with the removal from the EU constitutional treaty of references to EU symbols - the flag, the anthem, the single currency - although agrees that the overall text should not be called a Constitution and instead should contain a minimum set of rules, says the Romanian Foreign Minister Adrian Cioroianu. Germany, which currently holds the EU presidency, has sent a questionnaire to member states containing five questions on the future of the EU and on how they view the adoption of the constitutional treaty. The treaty is expected to be adopted at the EU summit, which is to be held at the end of this week. It is the first time Romania has been consulted over a EU matter and the issue concerning the constitutional treaty is a controversial subject, after the initial document was rejected in both France and the Netherlands, via a referendum in 2005. Romania, the second largest member state in Eastern Europe, is closer to sharing the perspective of Europe's "heavyweights", France and Germany. It is the "good child", unlike Poland, for instance, or even the Czech Republic, who have started to become an "issue" for the EU, since they often dispute the measures taken by the more powerful countries. The first question asked by Germany is the following: "Do you agree with reducing the content of the constitutional treaty, by keeping it to a minimum?" According to Cioroianu, Romania gave a positive answer.
