Alfa Securities, the brokerage subsidiary of the influent Russian economic and politic group Alfa, confirmed that it had brokered the special transactions for the sale of an 8% stake in the Romanian aluminium producer Alro at the beginning of the year.
Representatives of the London-based brokerage agency specified that the transaction was not carried on behalf of Alfa Group and that another important investor whose name they declined to reveal was behind the deal.
"We did broker the transaction, but the purchaser is a client that does not belong to Alfa Group. We have no interest in Alro, but our client is a portfolio one, aiming at long-term investments," Paul Van der Boogaard, Alfa Securities president, told Ziarul Financiar.
After the 8% stake in Alro, sold by the investment fund Broadhurst, was split and peddled in numerous Stock Exchange transactions, in order to hide the identity of the new owner, Alfa group emerged in Alro's shareholding structure at the beginning of this month.
The Russian giant, which has international business in a lot of economic fields, among which aluminium trade, had been registered in Alro's shareholding structure with a 3% stake, together with two undisclosed names of investment funds. In the meanwhile, Alfa was not registered anymore as an Alro shareholder.
"We were registered in Alro's shareholding structure, but we have already transferred our stake from our account to another," Van der Boogaard specified.
The same investor is likely to stand behind the investment funds, but its name has not been disclosed yet. Andrei Siminel, Broadhurst administrator, says that he ignores the identity of the new stockholder.
The decision to sell the stake may have come from the United States, where the company administering the fund, NCH (New Century Holdings), has its headquarters.
Alro situation on the Stock Exchange is unclear, as its shares are stalled from trading following the controversial announcement of the share capital increase.
