Bachus Buzau in the red

12.05.2005, 20:03 4

Bachus Buzau, a medium-sized player on Romanian the wine market, concluded last year with a 2.5 million euro (105bn ROL) turnover, a fall on the previous year''s figure of nearly 3 million euros (109bn ROL). The company posted 1.2 million euros (49bn ROL) in net losses, the same as in 2003. Company debts that need to be paid within one year kept the same level in 2004 as in 2003 at 3 million euros, while total debt was 3.6 million euros. Bachus Buzau makes fine red and white wine under the Pietroasa, Rezerve and Gold Edition brands. The company also makes table wine and invested 200,000 euros in a PET production line two years ago. Price issues make some winemakers prefer to sell wine in PET bottles, which come with lower manufacturing costs and allow for larger sales volumes. One of the negative sides of PET bottled wine is its very short shelf life of only 90 days as a result of oxidation. This problem is one of the reasons behind the company''s decision to enter the bag-in-box wine market. ZF
