Barroso wants Romania in the EU ASAP

15.05.2006, 00:00 5

European Commission President Jose Manuel Durao Barroso on Sunday said he wished to see Romania and Bulgaria join the EU "as soon as possible" in an interview for BBC television quoted by the AFP. The two countries hope to get a positive answer on Tuesday that their initial EU accession (January 1, 2007) schedule will be kept. "We are going to take the decision Tuesday, we cannot yet tell you which decision because that''s a collective decision," Barroso explained from Brussels. "I am very much in favour of having as soon as possible Romania, Bulgaria. I think it is good for Europe and good for them, provided they meet exactly all the criteria including questions of judicial affairs and tackling corruption and tackling, of course, organised crime," the European Commission President said. Without making any forecast on the decision to be taken on Tuesday, Barroso explained there were three possibilities for Romania and Bulgaria. "One possibility would be to tell them everything is perfect and they can join in 2007, the other is to tell them "you haven''t done your homework well, you cannot join any sooner than 2008," and the third possibility is to tell them "well, you can join on January 1, 2007, but you need to do this, this, and this first."
