Celestica starts production in Bors

16.11.2004, 00:00 15

Canadian company Celestica, one of the most important international producers of electronic subassemblies, is to invest around 100 million euros in a production facility in the commune of Bors, Bihor county, the Romanian Agency for Foreign Investments (ARIS) announced yesterday.

This greenfield-type investment will comprise four independent manufacturing units, each of which will be a fully equipped production unit.

"At first only one unit will be operational; three further units will become operational by 2007," announced C.W. Kong, Celestica's vice-president for Europe.

By the time the investment is completed, the buildings will cover approximately 6.9 hectares of land. Celestica officials say they have $25 million in investments scheduled for this year, and the remaining investments will be made over the next five years at a rate of $15 million per year.

Celestica's vice-president forecasts a turnover of $300 million for Celestica's first year in business in Romania, which will represent the capacity of one unit and means that when the investment is completed Celestica should enjoy revenues in excess of one billion dollars.

The new production facility will generate 500 jobs at first, more than 30% of which will be engineering positions.

The investment in Romania is the Canadian company's second operational platform in the Central and Eastern European region, after its investment in the Czech Republic.

Celestica officials inspected a number of locations in the western region of Romania and opted for Bors precisely because of the opportunities the location provides: proximity to the Bors industrial park, proximity to a university city (Oradea) and an EU border, as well as the necessary infrastructure already in place.

"All these things can contribute to creating a modern industrial campus model that will co-locate various suppliers for this industry. The 'virtual campus' model can therefore create the premise for development of the Lean Enterprise system (manufacturing system that entails maintaining stocks of raw material and semi-finished products as low as possible), allowing suppliers in the Bors industrial park to provide services and products to clients in Romania, Hungary and Ukraine," the Celestica representative said.
