The tenth IT and telecommunications fair, CERF 2001, opened yesterday at Romexpo Complex in Bucharest.

Those attending the opening include President Ion Iliescu and IT and Communications minister Dan Nica. Expotek, the company in charge of organising the event, expects some 100,000 visitors this year.

The number of visitors in 2001 will go up 20,000, reaching the same level as in 1997 or 1998, at least, statistics on the official CERF website say.

As regards specialised exhibitions organised in Romania, CERF ranks second in terms of visitor number and third in terms of number of participating companies, according to statistics published by Romexpo and Expoline International.

Where the exhibition space is concerned, it is 7% smaller this year, as Flamingo Computers Company, which held a stand accounting for 4% of the total space, decided to back out.

Expotek officials say there are no more than 100 companies this year, but the number of companies represented exceeds 370.
