Connex reaches 5.2m customers halfway into year

Mobile communications company Connex''s number of customers reached 5.25 million by the end of June, an increase of 28% since mid 2004, announced Vodafone, the world''s largest mobile telephony company, which now owns 99.1% in MobiFon (owner of Connex), on Monday. They did not reveal any first-half results for the group or for Connex.

The announcement shows the operator attracted 227,000 new customers in the second quarter of 2005, twice the amount at the end of the first quarter: at the end of March Connex had 5.023 million users, up from 3.67 million at the end of March 2004. Of all Connex''s customers, 65% were using prepaid cards at the end of June, with the rest being post-paid subscribers. MobiFon''s average revenue per user in the twelve months to June 30 was 167 dollars (137 euros). Depending on the type of user, revenues generated by prepaid customers average at 67 dollars (55 euros) per year, while post-paid subscribers generate 330 dollars (270 euros) a year.

Connex''s main competitor, Orange Romania, which is owned by France Telecom (96.63%), reached 5.290 million customers at the end of March. The company is set to announce its second quarter results on July 28. The Vodafone Group announced it had reached 165 million customers worldwide by the end of the first half of 2005.

Vodafone added 4.1 million new clients in the second quarter.

Vodafone signed up 1.1 million new third generation mobile users in the second quarter, taking the total of registered 3G users to 3.3 millions.
