Daimler Chrysler teams up with Tiriac to sell Mercedes cars

19.05.2006, 00:00 15

German-American group Daimler Chrysler will become directly involved in the business to sell Mercedes cars on the Romanian market in 2007. It will do so by forming a joint venture with Autorom, a company controlled by businessman Ion Tiriac, which is the sole importer of the brands of the German group. The new entity that will probably be called Daimler Chrysler Romania will be jointly held by the Germans and Autorom and will handle import and distribution of the brands of the international automotive group. It is yet undecided how much Daimler Chrysler will own; however "it will be a minimal percentage that will allow them to control this joint venture," stated Valentin Radu, Autorom''s general manager. "An audit is to be performed by a company both parties agree on, but not all the details have been set yet," specified Alexandru Dragos Draghici, development manager of Tiriac Auto, Autorom owner. The company officials added the agreement would not include a cash transaction. Autorom''s turnover amounted to almost 50 million euros last year and about 80% of the revenues were collected from imports of Mercedes cars, according to official estimates. All in all, 3,746 vehicles manufactured by the Daimler Chrysler group were sold on the Romanian market last year. Autorom is now the sole importer of Mercedes Benz, Chrysler, Jeep, Smart and Dodge. Its sales network comprises 13 cities, 5 of which are covered by dealers held by Tiriac Auto.
