Decline in occupancy rate and fee cuts hurt Ramada hotels' revenues

The Ramada Plaza and Ramada Parc hotels, which are part of theParc Hotels group, recorded a 20% decline in revenues in the firsteight months of this year against the similar period of last yearamid a decline in accommodation fees and a 40-50% occupancy rate.The two four-star hotels posted a combined turnover almost equal tothat of the five-star Howard Johnson hotel in Bucharest.

"The turnover, as distributed across the three profit centres,amounts to 40% for Ramada Bucharest Parc, 30% for Parc Event Center(conference halls, restaurants) and the remaining 30% is accountedfor by the Ramada Plaza Bucharest hotel. The business of the ParcHotels group fell by 20% in the first eight months of this year,"said Daniel Ben-Yehuda, manager of the Parc Hotels group, withoutspecifying the absolute value of sales.

The four-star hotels, located in northern Bucharest, have 567rooms in all and posted an 8.4 million-euro turnover last year,according to data from the Ministry of Finance.

In the first eight months of this year, the two hotels collecteda maximum of 5.9 million euros, according to ZF calculations, whichare based on the occupancy rate and on an average fee of 90 eurosfor Ramada Parc and of 100 euros for Ramada Plaza.

On the other hand, revenues collected by five-star HowardJohnson hotel, which has 285 rooms, almost matched revenuescumulated by the two four-star hotels in the first eight months ofthe year. The hotel's management has been taken over this month bySonia Nastase, 37, who replaces British-born Peter Craig Martin,thus becoming the first Romanian woman in charge of a five-starhotel on the Romanian market.

In her two-year term, Sonia Nastase plans to bring growth to thehotel, with this year being the most difficult for Bucharesthotels, which have cut fees by 30%.

The price of a single room plus breakfast at the Ramada Plazaamounts to 99 euros, while a room costs 83 euros per night atRamada Parc, according to the hotels' booking service. On the otherhand, a single room with breakfast included costs 153 euros at thefive-star hotel.

The three hotels are controlled by businessman GabrielPopoviciu.
