DuPont has big plans for Romania

28.06.2005, 19:27 6

US giant DuPont has gained a foothold on the Romanian market by opening a subsidiary. The 27bn-dollar company also announced it was eyeing acquisitions and planning construction of greenfield-type production facilities. "We have been finalising our plans for Romania over the last two years and decided a year ago we could not ignore this market, which I see as very attractive. We want to become major players on this market, which I see as having only challenges, and no risks," says Mathieu Vrijsen, chairman of DuPont''s Europe and Middle East division. He said DuPont was looking into acquisitions on the Romanian market, though he did not offer any details. "We are very careful with acquisitions. It is not about money. Our five-year plan will require acquisitions. We are considering opportunities but it is too early to say something now. And don''t expect any surprises this year - they will come in the period up to 2010." DuPont made 50 million dollars (42 million euros) in revenues on the Romanian market last year, largely from its pesticide, herbicide and seed business, which it conducts through Pioneer Romania. It expects this year''s turnover to reach 75 million dollars (62.5 million euros). It recently opened a subsidiary in Bucharest, which sees it adding construction and infrastructure, automotive, petroleum and natural gas operations to its existing agriculture and food division. ZF
