Ericsson Romania estimates a 16% turnover increase in 2001

21.05.2001, 00:00 13

Ericsson Romania in the first four months of the year registered some $32 million in sales, $4 million more than in the same time last year, Thomas Lundin, company chairman told Ziarul Financiar.

He says the turnover estimated for this year could reach $175 million, $25 million higher than in 2000. "Last year, telecommunications equipment accounted for about 85% in our turnover," Lundin added.

Ericsson Romania chairman estimates the mobile telephony to maintain the same growth pace as the one last year at least or develop even faster over the next few years. He feels Romania is not ready for the UMTS (the third generation mobile telephony, 3G, standard) yet, but as soon as the system is implemented, that is two or three years, "this business could turn even more profitable for Ericsson than the 2G (i.e. GSM) one."

Ericsson Romania supplies 2G equipment to the top three mobile telephony operators on the Romanian market (MobilRom, MobiFon and Cosmorom), and, as sources in the market say, it might also supply GPRS (2.5G) equipment for at least one of the three. MobilRom and MobiFon representatives last week announced they would prepare their networks for GPRS in a few months.

Ericsson Romania chairman did not volunteer any details about the company's contracts with the mobile telephony operators, but said the Swedish group "states its intentions of attracting active investors in Romania's telecommunications infrastructure in the future too, as it has played an active role on this market ever since 1927, by implementing the newest technologies in the field."

Internationally, the Swedish concern in Q1 registered the highest increase in mobile telephony equipment sales, that is 8% due to contracts for UMTS and Multi-Service Networks.

This is why a 2000 chart drawn up by US-based Dataquest Company, a division of Gartner, which specialises in IT and telecommunications analyses, places Ericsson first in terms of telecommunications equipment sales, after four years of ranking second.
