Hypermarkets behind record recruitment campaign in Romania

09.06.2003, 00:00 9

All the Romanian newspapers have dealt with collective layoffs in the past few years. What will all those people do if they are kicked out of the "large industrial platforms," the authorities wondered, hesitating to push through with restructuring. What will they do? That's simple. They will switch to the "large commercial platforms."

Ads spreading on half-pages in the dailies, billboards in the subway stations, 140,000 leaflets slipped in the mailboxes. These are the elements of a new campaign worth more than 150,000 euros, which has been running lately on the Romanian market.

Still, the campaign is not highlighting the launch of a new product or store, but rather the other way around. This time, people are no longer wanted to go and spend their money, they are wanted to go and make some. French group Cora is hiring 900 people for its first hypermarket that will open this fall. This is the biggest collective hiring that has ever been done in Romania.

"Les grandes surfaces", the French name for the hypermarkets, need hundreds of people - commercial staff. Thus, Cora and Carrefour have become the largest hiring companies on the Romanian market.

Carrefour is recruiting more than 600 persons for its second store, which will also open this fall.

"The Cora campaign is the largest recruiting campaign ever launched in Romania. There also was the Carrefour campaign, which hired 500 people for its first hypermarket," says Adrian Ciocodan, General Manager Smartbox Consulting Group.

According to Ciocodan, this trend is set to continue, as foreign groups are rushing on the Romanian commercial market.

Carrefour Romania now has some 800 employees, with the number set to soar to 2,000 by the beginning of next year. "For the Carrefour Orhideea hypermarket that will open this autumn, and the Carrefour Colentina, which will be dedicated at the beginning of next year, we will hire more than 600 people for each unit," says Francois Oliver, general manager of Carrefour Romania.

German group Metro Cash&Carry is the commercial company employing the most people, as it holds 15 stores, each with some 300-350 employees, which means 5,000 employees.

But exactly how motivated the Romanians are, as, although they have significant promotion opportunities as part of a multinational company, they have some serious work to do?

"This is the half of the campaign and we already have a database including 2,500 people that will be invited to the final interview, which will take place between July-August," says Mariana Dragan, communication manager with Cora Romania.
