07.03.2006, 00:00 16

Kaufland Romania, the hypermarket operator, upwardly revised its target relating to the expansion of its network in Romania from 40 to 50 stores.

The operator is going to open new units in Baia Mare, Targu Mures and Galati this year, according to the general manager of the firm, Gunter Grieb.

"In the first stage, we plan to reach 50 stores over the next four years," Grieb specified.

Another Kaufland store will be opened in Suceava in early summer, and, regarding the second store in Bucharest, which is to be located on Barbu Vacarescu boulevard, the Kaufland general manager specified this would be finalised by yearend.

At the same time, Grieb included Bistrita, Constanta, Hunedoara, Satu Mare, Targoviste and Zalau as cities which are among the future locations of Kaufland stores, without mentioning the deadline for the finalisation of construction works.

The main factors Kaufland considers when planning to open new stores are cities with more than 150,000 inhabitants, with a space ranging between 3,500 and 5,000 square metres for the surface area of the hypermarket. On average, investments per Kaufland store amount to 8-10m euros.

Kaufland owns five stores in Romania, in Bucharest, Ramnicu Valcea, Ploiesti, Alba Iulia and Timisoara.

So far, total funds Kaufland has invested in Romania exceed 150 million euros, aimed at the construction of the five stores, the company''s headquarters and the central warehouse in Ploiesti. At the same time, the sum includes work for hypermarkets that are currently under construction. "We hope to finalise works for the construction of modules two and three of Ploiesti-based central warehouse," added Grieb.

The German company intends to become the leader of the Romanian food retail market in the next years, promoting the discount hypermarket concept.
