German group Knauf, with annual turnover worth over 5 billion euros, will build a plasterboard plant with a capacity of 35 million square metres near Cluj, with an investment worth around 70 million euros. The Germans will, therefore, become the third largest plasterboard manufacturer, behind the Rigips Romania group (a part of the French group Saint-Gobain) and Lafarge Arcom Gips, a division of the French group Lafarge. Knauf already has a similar ongoing investment in Bulgaria, which will cover the South of Romania and Bucharest, while the plant in Cluj will cover demand in Transylvania and the North of the country. " After we have completed the plant in Bulgaria, we will start building one in Cluj, with a 35 million square-metre production capacity (equivalent to half of last year's plasterboard consumption i.e.) The plant in Cluj will cover demand in the North of Romania, while the one in Bulgaria will cater to the South and to Bucharest," Frederick Knauf told ZF. He is general manager of Knauf Gips, the local branch of the group, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Knauf group.
