The Bucharest Marriott Grand Hotel last year logged some $23 million in turnover, up 15% since 2001, Richard Zeolla, the hotel's general manager told Ziarul Financiar. Zeolla forecasts similar revenues for this year, since the Bucharest hotel market may actually post a slight decrease as compared to 2002.
The hotel hosted 110,000 guests in 2002, up ten percent since the previous year. The Marriott mainly attracts foreign tourists, with Romanians accounting for a mere 20% of the total number of guests. "The average occupancy rate amounted to 64%", the hotel manager said.
The guests spent an average of three days at the Marriott, which is more than in 2001. The price for one standard room at the Marriott is 225 dollars/night, but Zeolla declined to disclose last year's average revenues per tourist. Accommodation accounts for 60% of the hotel's turnover, with the rest of 40% supplied by the "Food and Beverage" division (restaurants and bars) and by the events hosted by the Marriott (seminars, meetings, fashion shows, etc.)
The Marriott has hosted several international events over the past few months, such as the EBRD meeting, the International Road Transport Union (IRU) congress, but also fashion shows and car launches.
The Bucharest Marriott Grand Hotel posted $20m turnover in 2001, when the occupancy rate amounted to 52%. Early last year, Marriott officials said they were aiming for a 10% revenue increase, also estimating the Bucharest hotel market was likely to post a decrease.
This time, the total revenues of the Bucharest-based hotels will be similar to the levels recorded last year, but they may also post a slight decrease, Zeolla says. The five-star Marriott has 402 rooms and suites, five restaurants and bars, plus ten conference rooms that can accommodate up to 1,500 people.
