McDonald's Romania, which operates one of the largest chains of fast-food restaurants on the local market, closed the year 2006 with operating profit worth 23 million RON (6.8 million euros), double the previous year's levels. "The profit derived in 2006 has beaten all expectations. It is more than double the level posted in 2005," said Cristian Savu, communication manager of McDonald's Romania. The sales reached and then exceeded the forecasts, namely the 20% jump estimated by the company for 2006. The company posted turnover worth 226 million RON (67 million euros) last year, up from the 180 million RON (53 million euros) derived in 2005. The surge in turnover was triggered by the expansion of the product ranges, by cuts in hamburgers' price, as well as by the upgrade of certain restaurants. The operating profit margin revolved around 10%. The 52 restaurants that McDonald's runs in the main Romanian cities have grown at the same pace as the company. According to data supplied by the company official, there were two new sales leaders: a restaurant which registered over 1 million orders last year and another one that reported sales worth over 9 million RON (2.6 million euros), double the average sales volume. The company representatives would not reveal the two restaurants' location.
