No insurance for 25% of registered cars

09.02.2006, 21:04 5

Data from insurance companies on the sale of auto civil liability policies have been checked against the database containing all the cars registered in Romania, which revealed that about one million vehicles do not have an auto civil liability (RCA) policy, representing about a quarter of all registered cars. "About 4 million cars are registered, and insurance companies reported about 3 million policies sold," says Mihail Tecau, secretary general of the Insurance Supervision Commission. This is a first step towards solving the mystery of RCA coverage, with estimates so far suggesting that between 25 and 40% of all registered cars lack this insurance, as shown on the database of the Ministry of Administration and Interior. What is, however, important to establish is how many out of the one million without liability insurance actually travel the public roads and could cause accidents, whose victims would not be compensated. Florin Radulescu, an official with the Driving Licence Regime and Vehicle Registration Department of the Ministry of Administration and Interior, estimates that about 200,000 of these vehicles are no longer used.
