Romanians spend 13bn euros on food

Romanian food retail, which includes hypermarket, supermarket,discount and kiosks, accounts for 13% of the Central Europeanmarket, worth 100 billion euros per year, which is clearlydominated by Poland.
"Food retail markets of all Central European countries - Hungary,the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia and Romania will increase, butthe contribution of each country to the regional growth will bedifferent, mainly because the markets differ in size and in termsof dynamics," says Dominika Kubaka, analyst on the retail segmentwithin PMR research company, and co-author of the report "Groceryretail in Central Europe 2010. Market analysis and developmentforecasts for 2010-2012".
Romanian food retail, put at 13 billion euros in 2009, will rise by1.5% this year, according to the PMR survey, with the increaselargely generated by the opening of new stores.
In the region, i.e. in the five mentioned countries, food retailwill reach 102.8 billion euros this year, compared with around 100billion euros in 2009. Romania's share of this market was 13% in2009, similar to Hungary's and the Czech Republic's, and four timeslower than Poland's.
