Romarm teams up with four Italian companies

02.04.2004, 00:00 15

Romarm National Company along with four other companies including Italy's Marconi, established a joint venture, Elettra Communications, which will make military fixed and mobile telecommunications equipment.

Elettra Communications will be based in Ploiesti and is held by Electromecanica Ploiesti, Marconi Selenia Communications SpA, Marconi Selenia Communications Romania, and MarkTel SIT SRL.

"The establishment of this company is the result of the co-operation in making telecommunications equipment between Electromecanica Ploiesti, a branch of Romarm and Italy's Marconi Selenia Communications, held by Finmecanica, which began in 1999," a release of the Economy and Trade Ministry shows.

Finmeccanica is the most important group in the Italian defence industry and one of the leading players in Europe.

"The co-operation between the two companies came as a result of the orders placed by the National Defence Ministry for equipment to be used by the Permanent Transmission Network of the Romanian military, which led to the first technology transfer to Romania from the Italian company," the release adds.

The Economy Ministry says the partnership with Marconi will provide the new company with a capital inflow and modern technologies necessary to make competitive military communications products.

"These days when the historic moment of Romania's accession to the North-Atlantic Alliance becomes official, the signing of the establishment documents for Elettra Communications can also be considered the start for building a new defence industry. This industry will equip the Romanian military in line with the requirements deriving from its future mission, backed by the expertise of the similar producers in the allied countries," the release reads.
