Sales of new cars up 4% in Q1

The sales of new cars on the Romanian market have progressed by 4.1% in the first quarter of this year from the same time last year to 50,260 units, according to the data presented by the Association Automotive Manufacturers and Importers (APIA) yesterday. The demand for domestically made cars witnessed over a 17% recoil to 25,253 units in the period considered, while sales of imported cars went up 40.4% to 25,007 units. With 21,441 unit sales, Automobile Dacia controls 42.7% of the new car market, while Daewoo Automobile Romania''s market share is 7.6% with 3,812 unit sales. The top imported brand is Skoda, which climbed up one place, with sales up nearly 64% to 3,967 units. The Czech carmaker managed to leave Renault behind, which posted a 1% increase to 3,664 units. Volkswagen remains third best-selling imported brand, with 2,887 cars sold, an increase of 25.2%, while another German brand, Opel, climbed one step to fourth place, the highest growth on this segment, 148.2% to 2,169 units. Number five, down one place from the first quarter in 2005 is Peugeot, 2,034 cars sold and a 3.9% increase. The Renault Clio remains the best-selling model on the market, 2,247 cars sold and a 20.9% increase. Second top-seller is the Skoda Octavia Tour, which moved up from tenth position that it occupied in the same time last year, after sales soared by 233.2% to 1,586 units. ZF
