Sara Lee lingerie exports to reach 160m euros

08.06.2004, 00:00 15

The largest lingerie producer in Romania, Arad-based Rosko Tekstil, an investment by the US giant Sara Lee, posted turnover worth 36 million euros in the first quarter of this year. This represents a relatively constant value when compared to the same period last year, said Didier Senn, the company's general manager.

"West-European markets, where our entire production goes, did not witness rapid growth in the first three months of this year, and moreover, the textiles and ready-made clothes sectors are actually going through a period of decline on these markets," Senn explained.

"For this year we are expecting turnover to range between 160 and 170 million euros. There won't be any significant growth from last year," he added. Rosko Textil is the 17th largest private company in Romania in terms of turnover registered in 2002.

The Arad-based Rosko Textil plant was built up by Sara Lee following a greenfield investment of almost 6 million euros and began production four years ago. Lingerie brands manufactured in Arad include Wonderbra and Unno. The plant has 630 employees.

Production is entirely destined for export, mostly targeted at European Union member states, France, Italy, Great Britain, Spain and Germany.

Sara Lee has plants in 40 countries all over the world and has annual sales worth $18 billion.

Last year, Sara Lee transferred part of its Asian lingerie production to Romania, primarily due to the short distance from West-European markets, entailing lower costs.
