Softwin to go public over the next three years

23.03.2001, 00:00 7

Romanian IT company Softwin registered $8 million in turnover in 2000, Florin Talpes, the general manager of the company, maintained. It estimates a 50% increase in turnover in 2001.

Florin Talpes also said that the company had a plan for its listing on a Stock Exchange in Europe over the next three years but did not specify which one.

The Softwin official added that RASDAQ had sent it a proposition for a possible floating on the Romanian capital market, as well, and that a decision was to be made some time soon.

"Our plan was to be listed on a European stock exchange in three years from now, but things can move faster than this, anyway," Talpes said. According to the Softwin official, the company got takeover propositions for amounts up to $20 million. It is currently held 100% by Talpes family.

"We have never said we were available for takeover, yet there's an investment fund knocking on our door every week," Talpes added.

The business was established in the early '90s and has grown with its own resources so far. "As a future plan, we want to involve investments funds in certain business lines of our company, though," Talpes specified.

Talpes feels it is a matter of five years until software developers will be among the wealthiest companies in Romania. "This industry has a major card up its sleeve: when you develop software, they can use it everywhere in the world.

All it takes to succeed is focus on the market niches where you are doing well," he offered. The Softwin official specified that the company would increase its turnover in software development, information security (AVX antiviral software bundle) inclusive, in 2001.

Over the next six months, the company is planning to open several distribution centres to promote its services. A possible location? Virginia, USA.

Softwin has identified two new viruses spreading over the Internet: VBS.Linda.A@mm and VBS.Staple.A. The former spreads quickly by using the e-mail addresses in the contact list, e-mailing itself to everyone in the Address Book.

After infecting a system, the virus scans the local hard drive and the network drives looking for .vbs, .jpeg or .mp3 files it erases, creating new files ending in .vbs.

The message subject line reads: "important message for ". Where the second virus is concerned, the subject line reads: "Help us to stop the bloodshed."
