UPC Romania takes over Focus Sat

12.04.2006, 00:00 8

UPC Romania has taken full control of the DTH satellite TV operator Focus Sat, after having acquired 50% last year. According to sources close to the deal, the market value of Focus Sat now stands at 8-10 million euros. UPC bought the remaining 50% in Focus Sat from the entrepreneurs that founded it. The satellite TV provider became operational at the end of 2004, but the commercial launch of the service took place in 2005. The founding shareholders of Focus Sat are a group of Romanian businessmen experienced in media or communications: Cristinel Popa, Cristian Burci, Bogdan Dragoi, Adrian Cojocaru and Valeriu Ionescu. The founders managed to sell half of the company to Chellomedia, the digital service division of the Liberty Global Europe (a group that also comprises UPC). At that moment, the company was evaluated at 6 to 8 million euros. Meanwhile, its value went up, with the founders set to collect most of the money once the second part of this transaction is completed. UPC will largely take over the management of Focus Sat. Satellite TV is a business started at the end of 2004, with the first company to have emerged on this market being Digi TV (held by RCS & RDS). Two more operators emerged in the meantime (Focus Sat and Max TV), with a fourth due to arrive soon (Boom TV). The market is now dominated by Digi TV, which accounts for some 70% of the total clients, analysts say. ZF
