War of optical fibre networks, current score: RCS-76 cities, Romtelecom-over 30, UPC-1

Romtelecom, ranking second on the domestic fixed-line Internetservices market, expanded its optical fibre network in ten majorcities and Ilfov county, with the investment allowing the companyto provide Internet data downloading speeds of as much as 100 Mbps,like rival RCS&RDS and UPC companies.

According to the data on Romtelecom's website, which as a firstcreated a special section dedicated to optical fibre services, thecompany's network is available in Ilfov county and in cities suchas Bucharest, Alba Iulia, Bacău, Brăila, Buzău, Cluj, Ploieşti andSibiu. The company offers clients the possibility of checkingwhether they are in the coverage area of the optical fibre networkthrough an application available on the web page.

Romtelecom's representatives did not provide additionalinformation on the company's investment in the optical fibrenetwork.

UPC, which in late September 2010 had over 250,000 fixed-lineInternet clients, launched 100 Mbps Internet services only inCluj.

At present, according to the data ZF collected from thecompany's website, RCS&RDS's fibre network covers 76cities.
