50m-euro tax refunds made so far

08.07.2004, 00:00 5

The Finance Ministry has repaid 1,922.16bn ROL (some 50 million euros) to individual taxpayers after having compared the due annual tax with the payments made by taxpayers in 2002, the National Fiscal Administration Agency (ANAF) announced on Tuesday. This accounts for 81.4% of the total amount the Finance Ministry has to refund, which reaches 2,359.07bn ROL (some 62 million euros). "The main reason why this whole process isn't over yet is that taxpayers didn't go to treasury offices to collect their refunds. A large number of cases in which the money hasn't been repaid yet involve amounts of less than 100,000 ROL, or even of less than 10,000 ROL. Taxpayers are not interested in collecting these amounts, and the tax authority offices do not have the necessary funds to send the amounts in question by post. This money is available for taxpayers to claim and will be used to compensate possible future taxpayer liabilities if not collected," explained Nicolae Plaiasu, ANAF chairman. ZF
