10.12.2007, 17:26 11

French retailer Carrefour is holding talks to take over Plus Discount stores in Romania through an international transaction, after it entered the supermarket segment with the acquisition of the Artima network, just-food.com reports. The Plus Discount network, held by the German group Tengelmann, has a total of 48 stores on the Romanian market and covers an overall sales area of around 48,000 square metres. The network could be worth 50-80 million euros, if one considers the transaction conducted by the German group in Spain. In July, Carrefour announced it had purchased the Plus network in Spain, with an overall sales area of 170,000 square metres, at a price of 200 million euros. Representatives of the French group did not wish to comment on the information. Plus Discount Romania posted an approximately 126.5 million-euro turnover in the fiscal year ending April 30, 2007, according to the German group's financial report. Plus Discount intends to expand its network to over 170 stores in Romania by 2010. The company has secured an 80 million-euro loan from the European Investment Bank in order to finance its development plans. Carrefour sales in Romania went up by over 30% in the first 9 months of the year, and reached around 560 million euros (VAT included).
