05.12.2002, 00:00 8

The Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ) has sentenced former MP Gabriel Bivolaru to three years imprisonment for fraud. The court has also found that he shall pay more than 2,200bn ROL in civil liability to the Banca Romana pentru Dezvoltare (Romanian Development Bank - BRD). Furthermore, Bivolaru has to pay 10 million ROL in legal expenses to the Romanian State. Nearly six years after the first call to lift the parliamentary immunity of the former PDSR (Party of Social Democracy in Romania) deputy, he was also sentenced to two to three years in prison for each of the following counts: the payment of 22 cheques drawn upon empty accounts, the payment of 24 fake drafts, forging of seven passports and several hotel bills, all of which pardoned under the terms of Law 137/2001. CSJ also ruled that Bivolaru must not leave the locality where he domiciles and decided to seize his tangible and intangible assets. The sentence handed out on Tuesday may be challenged with the nine-judge panel of the Supreme Court of Justice within ten days. ZF
