Gara de Nord replaced by business centre

28.11.2002, 00:00 10

The Ministry of Public Works, Transports and Housing (MLPTL) is planning to build a new main railway station in Bucharest, near the Basarab station. The ministry feels Gara de Nord (North Station) is no longer capable of meeting the current railway traffic requirements and its location poses problems to the road traffic in Bucharest. Minister Miron Mitrea said the current Gara de Nord building could be turned into a business and shopping area.
"The CFR Gara de Nord station in Bucharest could be moved 2.5 km further north on a piece of land near Gara Basarab, with this project entailing some $200 million in investments," Miron Mitrea said.
The minister explained the current location of the main railway station in Bucharest was causing problems to both the road traffic, because it obstructs a major area between Podul Grant (Grant Bridge) and Piata Garii (Station Square), and to the railway traffic, because it is too small for the current needs and allows no room for expansion of terminals. The MLPTL official said the completion of this project would fix the traffic issue in Bucharest and eliminate the need to build above or underground passageways.
"We are working on the feasibility study at the moment, also considering the technical and architectural solutions to carry out this project. One thing is sure though, the piece of land we would use to relocate the station would allow us to build a modern station and increase the number of lines, with the possibility of some free space for expansions," Mitrea added.
As part of the railway station rehabilitation programme, Mitrea will contract domestic and/or foreign loans worth $60 million in order to finance the rehabilitation works of 36 railway stations in county capitals.
