Ilie Sarbu announces good crops

24.07.2003, 00:00 10

Agriculture minister Ilie Sarbu on Tuesday said there was no good reason to rise the wheat price, explaining the wheat crop currently amounted to 1.89 million tonnes, very close to the 2.5 million tonne initially anticipated. Sarbu says a certain wheat shortage panic has spread across several counties. "As soon as we import the one million tonnes of wheat, the bread price will no longer go up," Sarbu said. The Government endorsed a decision to import one million tonnes of wheat with no custom duties. At the same time, the wheat seed was subsidised with 4,000 ROL/kg. The processors in the milling and bakery industry in their turn are planning to contribute funds to cultivating 200,000 ha of wheat this year to make sure they have enough raw material. "We want to help farmers by subsidising cultivation. We will at the same time conclude contracts with them, so that the wheat crop could be bought at prices set in line with the quotes on the international exchanges," said Aurel Popescu, Rompan employers' association chairman.
