PDSR (Party of Social Democracy) leaders are certain that the results of the elections will allow them to make up the new government, as long as, according to polls, the party will obtain approximately 35% of the votes, which is still not enough for a one-party government.
PDSR chairman Ion Iliescu took part in youth summer school organised in Busteni, where he stated that "as soon as the power balance is settled after the elections, PDSR will first take into account those parties to which it feels closer from a political point of view," PNL (Liberal Party) being one of these potential allies.
PDSR prime deputy chairman Adrian Nastase had previously explained in a show broadcast on TV that the only party PDSR would never accept to collaborate with was PN?CD (Peasants' Party). Nastase said at Busteni that, unlike in 1996 elections, PD (Democrat Party) was not the only party that could assure the balance of the government, adding that PD now competes with other parties, such as PNL, ApR (Alliance for Romania) and PRM (Great Romania Party).
PDSR leaders at the end of last week met ApR representatives, but according to PDSR leader the only issue agreed upon was "to promote a civilised atmosphere during the electoral campaign" and "to keep dialogue within normal parametres," "which might be the basis for possible post-electoral cooperation."
In his turn, Teodor Melescanu mentioned the possibility of a post-electoral cooperation but stated on Saturday that a common participation in the Government was conditioned by including ApR's offer in the respective programme.
Along with the signals addressed to potential political partners, PDSR would like to benefit from the "aura" of a political party enjoying civic support, the way CDR did in 1996. In order to achieve this goal, PDSR had several contacts with trade unions and is to organise a conference today together with the Democratic Forum in Romania, led by Razvan Theodorescu, one of the few civic organisations supporting PDSR.
